I design and make furniture and sculpture in wood.
I look for timber with distinct figure and shape, reflecting its environment or previous use — wood marked by fire, limbs shaped by pruning in an orchard, and salvaged timber. I am drawn to this history and sense of place as much as the organic forms and patterns of wood. I rely primarily on hand tools and traditional joinery, and aspire to the highest level of craftsmanship to create enduring artistic and functional objects.
My work reflects my background. I am a husband and father; I am American, but have lived and worked outside of the United States for much of my adult life. I worked as a legislative aid in the U.S. Senate, and then on peace-building and governance programs in Liberia, Uganda, Somalia, and Pakistan. I have also been a carpenter’s assistant and bicycle mechanic. I earned my MA in 2010 from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), and in 2022 I completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art at the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town.
I now live and work in Vermont, back where I grew up.
